Kerala Tourism - Alappuzha























Alappuzha, widely known as the "Venice of the East", is known for its scenic backwaters, lagoons, lakes and boat races. The major attraction in Alappuzha is the boat ride through the back waters, either in a small boat or a house boat. House boat cruises are arranged for tourists in and around Alleppey. There are many snake boat races are conducted in Alappuzha during Onam season like Nehru Trophy Boat Race, Payippadu Jalothsavam, Champakkulam Boat Race etc. The famous Nehru Trophy Boat race is held in Alappuzha Punnamada backwaters.










The Kuttanad region of Alappuzha is renowned as the Rice Bowl of the State. Kuttanad is rich with its emerald colored paddy fields. Another specialty is that, the plantation here is below the sea level.

Alappuzha or Alleppey is well connected through Rail, Road and Air. Nedumbassery International Airport is easily accessible from Alappuzha. Alappuzha has a railway Station and has road links to all major parts of Kerala.

* The Beaches in Alappuzha
The sun-kissing beaches in Alappuzha offer to any visitor that exquisite experience to relax amid the azure blue waters, with the palm and coconut grooves lining the lakes in a sylvan water world.

* Champpakkulam
It is a small island which showcases the natural resplendence and attractions of Alappuzha.

* Alappuzha backwaters
Alappuzha backwaters with the deep shadows of the tall palms that stand proudly on their banks around the glistening waters is a nowhere else-on-earth experience to any visitor.

* Arthunkal Church
Arthunkal is a famous pilgrim center, known for the St. Andrew's church. The Portuguese missionaries set up this Church 1851 AD. The church is popularly known as St. Sebastian's.

* Sree Krishna Temple
It is about 14km from Alappuzha. The classic architecture of this temple is worth seeing. Besides its architecture, it is well known for its 'Palpayasam' (sweet milk porridge), offered to the deity. The main event of the temple takes place in the months of March/April.

* Chettikulangara Bhagwathy Temple
The locals believe that the presiding deity of the temple has miraculous powers. On the occasion of Bharani the temple is abuzz with activity in the months of February and March.

* Mannarshala Temple
The Mannarshala Temple is about 32 km from Alappuzha and an important center of serpent worship in Kerala. On the occasion of Ayilyam (in the months of September and October), thousands gather to worship the serpent god.

* Krishnapuram Palace
The Krishnapuram palace is located at a distance of 47 km at Kayamkulam. The double storied palace contains one of the greatest Mural panels in Kerala. The 18th century Krishnapuram Palace is a typical example of Kerala Architecture.

* Pathiramanal
This little island on the backwaters is a favorite haunt of hundreds of rare migratory birds from different parts of the world. This is a small beautiful island in the Vembanad Lake and is accessible only by boat from Kumarakom and Muhamma.

* Karumadi
Close to the Ambalappuzha. the village of Karumadi is famous for its Karumadi Kuttan, a black granite figure of Buddha said to belong to the 9th or 10th century.

* Punnapra
A short distance from Alappuzha is Punnapra, a village which has gone down in history as the scene of a bitter and heroic fighting between the communists and Travancore State Police in the Punnapra Vayalar Communist uprising of 1946.These are the memorial of the martyrs located in Alappuzha near Kalarcode.

Alappuzha is one of the most attractive and green backwater destinations in Kerala, South India. Take a houseboat cruise on the tranquil backwaters of Alappuzha and we can feel the marvelous and exotic charm of the nature.
