Kannur is a very beautiful place situated in the Northern part of Kerala. Kannur was formerly known as Cannanore. Kannur is popularly known as the city of Looms and Lores. It is less polluted place with lush greeneries, salubrious climate and rich heritage. The beaches surrounded by bonnie coconut groves and its long rivers act an ornament to this place. Kannur is the land of the famous performing art Theyyam.
¤ Tourist Attractions of Kannur
* St. Angelo's Fort
St. Angelo's Fort, built in 1505 the first Portuguese Viceroy of India, is situated near the sea coast and is about 2 km away from Kannur town. Even now, it is in a fairly good state of preservation, though parts of it have collapsed. A few obsolete guns can be seen at the place. The fort is a worth to see construction. The view of the sea from the top of the fort is really astonishing. The area is not that inhabited and is hence a very calm and pleasant place.
* Muzhappilangad Beach
The only drive-in-beach in Kerala, where you can drive an entire length of 4 K.m. Protected by the black rocks from the currents of the deep, the shallow waters of this long, clean beach is a swimmer's paradise.
* Meenkunnu Beach
Situated at Azhikode, it is hardly a few kilometres from the town. The virgin beach is a tourist's paradise with golden sand and surf.
* Payyambalam Beach
The Payyambalam beach is one of the beautiful beaches in the State and is an ideal place to spend evenings, irrespepctive of seasons. It has an unbroken coastline of a few kilometres.
* Snake Park at Parassinikkadavu
The Snake Park at Parassinikkadavu is situated 18 kms. Away from Kannur town. It Is one of the best known snake parks in the country . The park is dedicated to the preservation and conservation of snakes, most of which are becoming extinct gradually. There is a large collection of poisonous and non-poisonous snakes.
* Mappila Bay
Situated near the St. Angelo's Fort, the Mappila bay has a historical background. The bay was famous during the Kolathiris' regime as a commercial harbour Today, Mappila bay has turned into a modernised fishing harbour. Boating in the sea, if the weather permits, will be an unforgettable experience.
* Pazhassi Dam
The damsite, famous for its scenic beauty, is an ideal retreat for tourists. The D.T.P.C provides pleasure boating faciliaties at the reservoir.
* Paithalmala
Paithalmala is a hot trekking spot which is about 1372metres above sea level. It is located in the border of Kerala and Karnataka.
* Arakkal Palace
Arackal was the only Muslim royal family of Kerala.The Arakkal Palace was the residence of this family. Arakkal Palace is located 3 Kms from Kannur.
* Ezhimala
It is bonnie, isolated group of hills. 38 km north of Kannur. You will love this place surrounded by sea on its three sides, with deeper blue colored sea and unique textured sand. There is a Naval Academy here and hence is protected by the Navy.
* Madayi Mosque
This mosque built with marbles from Arabia is located 22 Kms from Kannur.It was built in 1124 AD.
* Thalassery
Thalassery is 21 Kms from Kannur.The Thalassery Fort located here was built in 1683. The Lighthouse, St. Rosario Church, the Collector's bungalow are other things you will find interesting in Thalassery. We can also visit the Brennen Cemetery where many British Administrators rest in peace.
* Gundert Bungalow
Gundert Bungalow is at Illikkunnu, Thalassery. It was the residence of German scholar Dr. Herman Gundert, who compiled the first Malayalam dictionary. He also built a church on Nettur Hill in 1889.
* Aralam Wild life Sanctuary
This sanctuary covering an area of 55 Sq Km is located almost 40 Kms from the district head quarters. The area is situated in a tropical evergreen forest area. You can watch a variety of animals and birds here.
